The department faculty and industry leaders established the following educational objectives for the K-State construction science and management undergraduate program:

“Within the first few years following graduation from the four-year Construction Science and Management program at Kansas State University, graduates are expected to be working as a professional in an area closely related to construction, contributing to the success of their employer, pursuing professional development and/or certification, and advancing professionally with confidence and experience in the construction industry.”

Program Outcomes

Upon graduation from the Kansas State University Construction Science and Management Program, graduates shall be able to:

1. Communicate effectively by:

a. Creating appropriate oral presentations.

b. Creating appropriate written documents.

c. Applying appropriate graphic depictions.

2. Formulate a Project Safety Plan through:

a. Creating a Project Specific Safety Plan.

b. Applying a safety culture through safety programs, codes and standards. (RS)

3. Formulate construction cost estimates through:

a. Creating construction project cost estimates through the Performance Criteria:

i. Analyze and formulate quantity takeoffs.

ii. Analyze and formulate cost estimates.

b. Applying quantity takeoff methods. (RS)

c. Understanding the basic logic of the creation of an estimate. (RS) 

4. Compose and revise construction project schedules through:

a. Creating construction project schedules through the Performance Criteria:

i. Analyze and formulate activities and logic.

ii. Analyze and formulate resources, durations, and costs.

b. Applying project schedule methods. (RS)

c. Understanding project schedules. (RS)

5. Discern ethical practices by:

a. Analyzing professional decisions based on ethical principles.

b. Understanding the fundamentals of professional ethics. (RS)

6. Appraise construction documents for the purposes of:

a. Analyzing construction documents for planning and management of construction processes.

b. Understanding construction documents. (RS)

7. Appraise required construction project resources by:

a. Analyzing methods, materials, and equipment used to construct projects.

b. Understanding basic methods, materials, and equipment used for construction projects. (RS)

8. Apply construction management skills as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.

9. Demonstrate electronic-based technology to manage the construction process by:

a. Applying electronic-based technology to manage the construction process.

b. Understanding basic electronic-based technology to manage the construction process. (RS)

10. Apply basic surveying techniques for construction layout and control.

11. Understand different methods of project delivery and the roles and responsibilities of all constituencies involved in the design and construction process.

12. Understand construction risk management.

13. Understand construction accounting and cost control.

14. Understand construction quality assurance and control.

15. Understand construction project control processes.

16. Understand the legal implications of contract, common, and regulatory law to manage a construction project.

17. Understand the basic principles of sustainable construction.

18. Understand the basic principles of structural behavior.

19. Identify the basic principles of MEP systems through:

a. Understanding the basic principles of HVAC mechanical systems.

b. Understanding the basic principles of electrical and lighting systems.

c. Understanding the basic principles of plumbing, piping, and fire protection systems.
