Professional experience

After completing his Ph.D. from Kansas State University in 2006, Kyle Larson started a 10-plus-year career in industry as a diagnostic/forensic engineer in the Kansas City area. His primary role was to review existing or damaged structures, and provide scopes of upgrades/repair. He also spent time in the public sector as a materials engineer. Prior to joining K-State in the fall of 2020, he was the program coordinator for another institution where he developed and taught various subjects to both construction management and civil engineering technology students. He is a licensed professional engineer in Kansas and Missouri.

Research

Larson’s current research interests are in both construction and engineering education along with concrete structures. As a graduate student he conducted research in two different areas: 1) both analytical and experimental research on repair of damaged prestressed girders with use of a filter performance rating, or FPR; and 2) use of self-consolidating concrete, or SCC, in prestressed members. Numerous SCC mixtures were evaluated to determine whether or not development lengths met code requirements.

Academic highlights

Larson has published several papers in highly regarded peer-reviewed journals such as ASCE and PCI. He also has numerous papers published in conference proceedings and has given several presentations at high-profile venues. In 2019 he was awarded the Associated Schools of Construction – Region 4 Teaching Award. He has also been a coach for several ASC – Region 4 competition teams. As a graduate student he won the 2006 George D. Nasser award presented by PCI.
