Professional experience

Upon graduating from Kansas State University’s Construction Science and Management program in 2009, Dave Dalbey began his career in the construction industry working in project management. As digital tools and technologies became increasingly integral to construction workflows, Dalbey transitioned his professional focus toward Virtual Design and Construction (VDC), pursuing his interest in leveraging 3D modeling platforms and reality capture technologies to improve project planning, coordination and delivery.

Dalbey has been with McCownGordon Construction in Kansas City, Missouri, since 2013, where he currently leads the firm’s national VDC department. In this role, he helps define strategy, standards and innovation related to construction technology across projects and teams nationwide. His work focuses on integrating emerging digital tools into real-world construction practice and advancing collaborative, model-based project delivery.

Dalbey continues to work full time in industry while teaching at K-State, bringing current professional experience and emerging technology perspectives into the classroom. By maintaining an active leadership role in industry, he provides students with direct exposure to the technologies, workflows and challenges shaping the future of the construction profession.

Academic highlights

Since 2020, Dalbey has taught Technology Management of the Construction Process and has previously taught Introduction to Building Information Modeling (BIM). During this time, he has continually evolved course curriculum to emphasize applied learning and industry relevance. Course instruction incorporates demonstrations of reality capture hardware and software, model-based coordination tools and guest speakers representing a range of perspectives from across the construction industry.

Dalbey’s professional and academic interests focus on the evolving role of digital technologies in construction practice. Areas of emphasis include federated model management, digital twins, reality capture, artificial intelligence in construction, and augmented and virtual reality. His work emphasizes the practical application of these technologies to improve collaboration, decision-making and project delivery, while preparing students to enter the profession with an understanding of how emerging digital tools are transforming the construction industry.
