Professional experience
As a multigenerational construction professional, Burgoon's passion for the industry began at a young age. Before transitioning to higher education in 2016, he held a variety of roles in the residential construction sector, including business owner, contractor, purchasing professional, estimator and hands-on tradesperson specializing in framing and concrete work. His experience spans organizations ranging from startups to a publicly traded homebuilder.
Research
Burgoon's research focuses on construction higher education and workforce development, with particular emphasis on student success and the non-cognitive factors that influence academic performance and a sense of belonging. His collaborative work has been published in academic journals such as the ASCE Journal of Management in Engineering and the International Journal of Construction Education and Research (IJCER), and he has presented at numerous academic conferences. Together with co-authors, his research has received recognition, including “Runner-up” for Best Journal Article at IJCER and “Best Conference Proceeding” at the Associated Schools of Construction annual conference.
Academic highlights
Prior to accepting his role at Kansas State University, Burgoon held academic positions in construction management programs at Colorado State University and the University of Nebraska–Kearney. He taught a wide range of upper- and lower-division courses, such as advanced estimating, construction safety and technical communication. Burgoon has also actively been involved in academic service, student advising and outreach. He chaired and served on multiple college and departmental committees and coached student teams for national competitions. His outreach included supporting summer camps for middle and high school students and supporting community-based projects through service learning and rural economic development.
